For a standard 2.4m UK ceiling, a 4 tread platform step ladder is the right size. Period homes with 2.7m to 3m ceilings need 6 treads. Warehouse racking and high retail ceilings usually need 8 to 10. Choose by platform height, aim to work at chest height, and never stand above the platform.
How tall is each step ladder size?
Each tread adds roughly 0.25m to 0.27m of platform height, so the tread count tells you more about the ladder than its closed length does. Our own Lyte Magnastep figures show the spread: the 4 tread model has a 0.969m platform and the 10 tread model has a 2.598m platform.
The table below gives typical ranges across brands. The comfortable job height assumes you're working at chest to shoulder height, about 1.5m above the platform, which is where you have control of a drill or a roller.
| Treads | Typical platform height | Comfortable job height | Typical jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 0.6m to 0.75m | Up to about 2.2m | Kitchen wall units, curtain poles, top shelves |
| 4 | 0.85m to 1.0m | About 2.4m to 2.5m | Standard ceilings, smoke alarms, light fittings |
| 5 | 1.05m to 1.25m | About 2.6m to 2.75m | Taller modern ceilings, shop shelving |
| 6 | 1.25m to 1.5m | About 2.75m to 3.0m | Victorian and Edwardian ceilings, office fit-outs |
| 7 | 1.45m to 1.75m | About 3.0m to 3.25m | High ceilings, stockrooms, signage |
| 8 | 1.7m to 2.0m | About 3.2m to 3.5m | Warehouse racking, church halls, gym lighting |
| 10 | 2.0m to 2.6m | About 3.5m to 4.1m | High-bay racking, atrium lights, tall shopfronts |

What size step ladder do I need for a 2.4m ceiling?
A 4 tread platform step ladder. Standing on a platform just under 1m high puts the ceiling at around head height for most adults, close enough to paint, change a fitting or drill a pilot hole without stretching.
A 3 tread step will get your fingertips to the ceiling, but you'll be working with your arms straight up. That's tiring after ten minutes and it pulls your weight backwards, which is how step ladders tip. If you're decorating a whole room, the extra tread is worth it.
Go to 5 treads only if you're tall enough to dislike bending your neck on a 4, or the ceiling is coved and higher than standard. Browse 4 tread step ladders.
What size step ladder for high ceilings and period properties?
A 6 tread platform step ladder covers most 2.7m to 3m ceilings in Victorian terraces and Edwardian semis. Our 6 tread step ladders sit at around 1.25m to 1.5m on the platform.
Ceilings above 3m, or a hallway with a high pendant light, push you to 7 treads. At that point the ladder weighs more, takes more floor space when open, and a handrail starts to earn its money. Our step ladders with handrails give you something to hold while both feet are on the platform.
A stairwell is a different problem. A step ladder needs four feet on one level surface, and stairs don't give you that. Read our guide to the best ladders for stairs before you try it.
Which step ladder size suits warehouses and commercial work?
Most warehouse and retail jobs need 8 or 10 treads, and at that height you should be buying EN131 Professional with a wide platform.
A 10 tread ladder is a big piece of kit. The Lyte 10 tread we stock weighs 13.5kg and stands 3.535m tall when closed, against 6.5kg and 1.795m for the 4 tread from the same range. You won't carry it up a narrow staircase easily, and it won't fit in most estate cars.
If staff are on it for more than a few minutes, or reaching over racking, a step ladder is the wrong tool. A podium step gives you a guarded platform and lets you use both hands safely. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, a ladder is only the right choice when a risk assessment shows the job is low risk and short duration.
Are treads, steps and rungs the same thing?
Mostly, but "6 step" and "6 tread" don't always describe the same ladder. Some brands count the platform as a tread and some don't [VERIFY: check how each stocked brand counts]. Two "6 tread" ladders can therefore have platforms 20cm apart.
Ignore the name and read the platform height in the specification. That one figure tells you where your feet will be, and it's the number we've used throughout this guide.
Working height is less reliable. Manufacturers calculate it differently. The Lyte figures above add 1.75m to the platform height, while other brands add 1.5m or less. Comparing working heights across brands can mislead you by 25cm [VERIFY: confirm the convention used by Werner and Youngman].
Which step ladder class do I need?
Buy EN131 Professional if you're using it for work, and Non-Professional only for occasional use at home.
Both classes carry a 150kg maximum load, which includes you, your clothes and your tools. The Professional class is tested to 50,000 load cycles against 10,000 for Non-Professional, so it copes better with being opened, closed and thrown in a van every day. Our EN131 classes explained guide covers the detail, and the EN131 Professional step ladders range is the place to start for trade buyers.
If you work near live electrics, choose glass fibre. Aluminium conducts. See our fibreglass platform step ladders.
How high can you safely stand on a step ladder?
Stand on the platform of a platform step ladder, and no higher. On a swingback step ladder without a platform, HSE guidance says to avoid the top three steps unless there's a suitable handhold [VERIFY: confirm wording against HSE leaflet INDG455].
That's why sizing matters. People who buy a ladder one size too short end up on the top cap or leaning sideways, and that's where most step ladder falls start. HSE guidance also limits step ladders to short jobs, so if you're likely to be up there for more than about 30 minutes, you need a platform or tower rather than a taller step ladder.
Step ladder size FAQs
Is a 4 tread step ladder tall enough for a ceiling?
Yes, for a standard 2.4m ceiling. A 4 tread platform puts your feet just under 1m off the floor, which brings the ceiling to roughly head height. For ceilings above about 2.6m, step up to 6 treads.
How tall is a 6 tread step ladder?
A 6 tread step ladder usually has a platform between 1.25m and 1.5m high, depending on the brand. That suits ceilings of around 2.75m to 3m. Check the platform height in the specification, because tread spacing varies between manufacturers.
How tall is a 10 tread step ladder?
Most 10 tread step ladders have a platform between 2m and 2.6m. The Lyte 10 tread we stock has a 2.598m platform and a quoted working height of 4.348m. It weighs 13.5kg, so plan for storage and handling before you buy one.
What is the tallest step ladder I should buy for home use?
For most homes, a 6 tread is the tallest you'll need. Anything bigger is heavy to move between rooms and awkward to store. If you need more height outside, an extension or combination ladder is usually the better buy.
Is a step ladder with a platform better than a swingback?
For most jobs, yes. A platform gives you a proper standing area and usually a handrail or knee rail, so you can stand higher with more control. Swingback step ladders are lighter and cheaper, but you lose the top few steps as safe standing positions.
If you're still unsure, measure the height of the job, take away 1.5m, and buy the step ladder whose platform is closest to that number. For a standard home that's a 4 tread. For a period property it's a 6 tread. For trade and warehouse work, compare our 8 tread and 10 tread step ladders, or browse every size in our platform step ladders range.
